The subfertile couple

Management of the subfertile couple

Approximately 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty in achieving a pregnancy naturally.
A couple that comes to the specialist for this reason is expected to undergo a series of tests and treatments which are likely to improve their chance of conception. The attitude of the supervising doctor is an important factor in determining the chance of success. The doctor must be experienced in order to systematically approach the problem and provide an individual plan of action, which suits the couple's needs and aspirations. Furthermore, it is important that the doctor is unbiased with regard to the choice of treatments and provide recommendations based on feasibility, success rates, practicalities of everyday life and financial restraints.
Dr Papathanasiou has a long-standing experience in managing couples with infertility, which he has acquired through training and working in reproductive medicine units in London, UK. He is also an expert in hormonal conditions, and has published a book on 'Polycystic ovaries' in greek.

In our clinic, we undertake the following investigations:
· Hormonal tests to confirm ovulation and investigate female hormonal conditions
· Screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
· Ultrasound monitoring of ovulation without hormonal treatment
· Ultrasound imaging of the uterus and ovaries
· Ultrasound imaging of the cavity of the uterus and patency of the Fallopian tubes (HyCoSy test)

We also collaborate with:
· A dedicated sperm lab, which provides accurate testing of sperm function and sperm preparation for fertility treatments
· A dedicated dietician, who undertakes dietary and lifestyle modifications that may help improve fertility

We undertake the following fertility treatments:
· Induction and monitoring of ovulation after treatment with clomiphene or injections
·  Intrauterine insemination at the practice
· Preparation and stimulation for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in the practice setting, followed by egg retrieval and embryo-transfer in a collaborating IVF unit in Athens

Dr Papathanasiou also undertakes key-hole surgery for conditions that may have a negative impact on fertility:
· Hysteroscopic removal of polyps from the cavity of the uterus
· Endoscopic removal of fibroids or septa
· Laparoscopic repair of proximal and distal Fallopian tube blockage
· Laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis or adhesions
· Laparoscopic drilling of polycystic ovaries
